Looking for Therapy

If you are reading this then it means you are ready for help; something is no longer working for you in your life and you are ready to create the change you crave.

Hi! My name is Abby Young.  You can expect I will challenge you to connect your mind, and emotional experiences, with your body. When you can align your body with your mind, your awareness grows and the ability to be present without suffering increases.

Life events alter our lens of life. The lens is the way in which we interpret life. To what degree is so individualistic. Mindfulness, EMDR, and Hypnotherapy are common modalities I use to work with you for a deeper healing experience. I meet you where you are in the journey and together we work on roadmaps that respect your goals for therapy.

Part of my philosophy is helping you instill HOPE and INNER STRENGTH in yourself again, or perhaps for the first time. It is difficult to grow into a life you want without these two components.

In Care,

Abby Young, LMSW, ACHT

About Me

I am a Kansas native born in Ottawa. I have moved away from the area a few times, but Lawrence brings me back every time.

I graduated with my undergraduate degree in journalism with an emphasis in photojournalism. After doing some work for a domestic violence shelter I knew helping people was my true passion.

I went back to school and received a master’s in social work from the University of Kansas and currently hold a license in Kansas and Missouri. Directly out of graduate school I began a career with United Way of Greater Kansas City. With this job I was able to connect people with resources, but my real passion was working in the oncology community. I co-founded a local not-for-profit, to help in the oncology community.

I went on to work at Gilda’s Club Kansas City. Here, I facilitated support groups and provided individual therapy for people with a variety of cancer impacts. I enjoyed helping people process the mental health side of their medical journey.

I then became an inpatient therapist at Stormont-Vail Behavioral Health. I worked with people needing inpatient crisis psychiatric care. I was truly inspired by the individuals I was privileged to serve. What was missing for me was investing in the relationship over time… getting to know someone deeply and helping them on their journey.

So here it brings me to Tillery Time Counseling. My specialty areas of helping people include grief & loss, trauma (including medical trauma), abuse/neglect, self-injury, mind/body, depression and anxiety. I specialize in Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy® and EMDR, when appropriate. I feel it is truly a privilege to work with individuals during their healing journey.

What’s In a Name?

I have been getting lots of questions about Tillery…where did that word come from? Since I am familiar with the word Tillery, I just assumed everyone else was too.

Here comes the full story behind Tillery Time as my business name. First of all my maiden name is Tillery. Having this name growing up came with some good quarks. It became a staple of humor to describe certain things or events in our family.

My dad, Ray Tillery, really is the driving force behind this name. Often times we would take road trip adventures. My father would get ants in his pants and off we were. Frequently these adventures happened with little to no planning. One thing was sure; it was always fun and interesting – yes that is the word I will use. This is how a Tillery Adventure began.

It was common that we would stop at a hole-in-the-wall place and eat some amazing food. But then the adventure would take some curves. We might be heading the wrong way on the highway or some how end up taking “the scenic route.” There were always stories that would make us laugh.

My father died in 2012, but the Tillery Adventures carry on. So to honor our Tillery Times together, with my sisters and mother also, I have included the Tillery legacy in my business name. Always feel free to ask me about some of the Tillery Times.
